What a Divergence Trader Actually Does

A divergence trader is a technical specialist who builds trades around one core idea: when price and momentum disagree, the existing trend is losing fuel. But the day-to-day reality is far less glamorous than textbook diagrams suggest. Real divergence traders spend most of their screen time rejecting setups, not entering them.

Divergence trader vs. generic technical trader

A generic technical trader scans for any clean pattern—breakouts, flags, support bounces. A divergence trader narrows the universe. They wait for momentum exhaustion to align with structure, then deploy capital only when several layers of evidence agree. Specialization means fewer trades, deeper context, and a much higher signal-to-noise ratio.

Why traders specialize in divergence

Specialization compounds. After 500 divergence trades, you start seeing nuances no checklist captures: the way RSI curls before a real reversal, the volume signature that precedes a failed signal, the candle shapes that mark genuine exhaustion. That pattern recognition is your edge—and it only develops if you commit to one playbook.

Markets and timeframes where divergence works best

Divergence works best in liquid, mean-reverting environments: major FX pairs, large-cap equities, index futures, and high-cap crypto. On timeframes, the 1-hour and 4-hour charts offer the cleanest balance of signal quality and trade frequency. Sub-15-minute charts produce too much noise; daily charts produce too few setups for skill-building.

The Four Types of Divergence Every Trader Must Know

Before any workflow makes sense, the categories have to be automatic.

Regular (classic) divergence

Regular divergence signals potential reversal. Bullish regular divergence: price prints a lower low, the oscillator prints a higher low. Bearish regular divergence: price prints a higher high, the oscillator prints a lower high. This is the trend-exhaustion signal most beginners chase.

Hidden divergence

Hidden divergence signals trend continuation—and it’s where experienced traders quietly make a lot of their money. Bullish hidden divergence: price prints a higher low, the oscillator prints a lower low (in an uptrend pullback). Bearish hidden divergence: price prints a lower high, the oscillator prints a higher high (in a downtrend rally). Hidden divergence keeps you trading with trend, which dramatically improves win rate.

Best Indicators for Spotting Divergence

Tools matter less than how you use them, but each oscillator has personality.

RSI divergence

RSI (14) is the workhorse for most divergence traders. For a full breakdown of how it is calculated, see Investopedia on RSI. It’s responsive, well-calibrated, and produces clean swing peaks. The trick: only trust RSI divergence when the prior swing pushed into overbought (>70) or oversold (<30). Mid-range divergences are noisy.

MACD divergence

MACD captures slower momentum shifts and works better on higher timeframes. The histogram is more useful than the signal-line crossover—watch for shrinking histogram peaks while price extends. MACD divergence on the 4H or daily often precedes multi-day reversals.

Volume-based divergence (OBV, A/D)

On-Balance Volume (OBV) and Accumulation/Distribution add the most underrated layer: participation. If price makes a new high but OBV doesn’t, large players aren’t buying the move. Volume divergence is especially powerful for stocks and crypto, where flow data is meaningful.

The Divergence Trader’s Confirmation Stack

This is what separates pros from people who just draw lines on RSI. A divergence trader never enters on a single signal—they require a stack of evidence.

Layer 1: Valid swing highs/lows

The swing points must be obvious. If you have to squint, it’s not a swing. Use a minimum bar separation (e.g., 5 bars between pivots) and require visible structure. Tiny ripples don’t count.

Layer 2: Indicator confirmation

The oscillator must clearly disagree with price. The peaks/troughs should be unambiguously higher or lower—not “kind of equal.” Ambiguous indicator readings produce ambiguous trades.

Layer 3: Price action trigger

Divergence alone is not an entry. You need a trigger: a break of a minor trendline, an engulfing candle at the divergence low, a failed retest of the swing high. The trigger is what tells the market it’s time. Without it, you’re early—and early is usually wrong.

Layer 4: Higher-timeframe alignment

The setup on your trading timeframe should not contradict the higher timeframe. If you’re taking a bearish divergence on the 1H but the 4H is in a strong uptrend with no exhaustion, you’re fighting a current. Pros either skip these or take half-size.

Trader annotating a chart to confirm a divergence setup with multiple layers of evidence

Filters That Eliminate False Divergence Signals

Why does divergence fail so often? Because most traders take every divergence. Filters are how you cut the bottom 60% of setups.

The ADX filter

ADX measures trend strength. When ADX is above 30, regular (reversal) divergences fail constantly—strong trends grind through them. Rule of thumb: take regular divergence only when ADX is below 25, and take hidden divergence only when ADX is above 20.

Swing distance and structure rules

The two swing points forming the divergence shouldn’t be too close (noise) or too far apart (stale signal). A practical window is 10–50 bars. Also: the second swing must occur at meaningful structure—a prior support/resistance, a key Fibonacci level, or a session high/low. Divergence in no-man’s-land is unreliable.

Why triple divergence beats single divergence

A single divergence catches early; a triple divergence catches exhaustion. When you see three consecutive lower highs in price paired with three consecutive higher highs in RSI, the move is genuinely out of buyers. Win rates on triple divergences are dramatically higher, even if the setups are rarer.

A Step-by-Step Divergence Trading Workflow

Process beats prediction. Here’s the daily loop a working divergence trader runs.

Pre-market scan

Review higher-timeframe bias on your watchlist (10–20 instruments max).

Mark key support, resistance, and prior session extremes.

Flag any instruments showing developing divergence on the 4H or 1H.

Set alerts at the trigger price—don’t sit on the chart waiting.

Entry, stop, and target rules

Entry: On confirmation candle close after the price-action trigger.

Stop: Beyond the swing extreme that formed the divergence, plus a small buffer (often 0.5× ATR).

Target 1: First major structure level (typically 1R–1.5R).

Target 2: Measured move or opposing structure (often 2.5R–3R).

Post-trade journaling

Every trade gets logged: screenshots before and after, the divergence type, ADX reading, confirmation layers present, emotional state, and outcome. The journal is your real curriculum—it teaches you which conditions actually pay you.

Risk Management Rules for Divergence Traders

The pattern doesn’t make you money. Risk management does.

Position sizing with ATR

Set stop distance based on volatility, not a fixed pip count. A common approach: stop = 1.5× ATR(14) beyond the swing. Then size the position so that stop distance equals exactly your max risk in dollars.

The 1% risk rule

Never risk more than 1% of account equity on a single divergence trade. For a broader framework on protecting your capital, see 8 Forex Risk Management Rules That Matter. Divergence has good R:R but mediocre raw win rate (often 45–55%). At 1% risk, a normal losing streak is annoying. At 3% risk, the same streak is account-threatening.

Scaling out at structure

Take 50% off at the first target to lock in a winning trade. Move stop to breakeven. Let the remaining 50% run toward the second target. This converts mediocre R:R into consistently profitable expectancy.

Trading journal and calculator used by a divergence trader to size positions and manage risk

Common Mistakes That Sink New Divergence Traders

Entering on the divergence itself, not on a confirmed price-action trigger.

Fighting strong trends with regular divergence (ADX above 30).

Ignoring higher timeframes and getting steamrolled by larger flows.

Moving stops to “give the trade room” once it goes against them.

Cherry-picking divergences after the fact, then assuming the win rate is real.

Trading every oscillator wiggle instead of waiting for clean, well-separated swings.

No journal, so the same mistakes repeat for years. Trading discipline is harder than chart reading — the hardest part of trading is often doing absolutely nothing.

How to Build Your Edge as a Divergence Trader

Edge is not a setup. Edge is a process repeated until it’s measurable.

Backtesting your divergence rules

Before risking real money, manually backtest 100+ historical divergences on your chosen instrument and timeframe. BabyPips has a solid guide to backtesting forex strategies if you need a starting framework. Record win rate, average R, and which filters mattered. You’ll discover that maybe only 30% of “valid” divergences—the

The best setup is a calm mind

This is an article written by our long term trader/mentor Pierre.

Hi Members,

I’m feeling pretty tired and stressed today.

Our youngest just headed back to school, and the other three are back at university—all in different towns—after a very long holiday. Between the stress of finding accommodation, managing all the payments, and sourcing furniture, it’s been a lot to handle. I know my body’s signals well enough to know when it’s time to hit the pause button for a day or two.

………………………………………………………….

The Emotional Stop Sign: Mastering the Market Mindset

The world of trading is a high-octane environment, often romanticized as a fast track to fortune. However, the image provides a stark, two-line reminder of a fundamental truth often overlooked by novice and veteran traders alike: the critical importance of emotional control. The message is simple yet profound: “If you’re trading and your heart is racing, stop. If you’re trading and your hands are shaking, stop.”

This isn’t just a casual suggestion; it’s a vital safety mechanism for financial survival.

The Physiology of Poor Decisions

When a trader’s heart races or hands shake, the body is in a state of physiological arousal, commonly known as the “fight or flight” response. This state is governed by adrenaline and cortisol, hormones that prepare the body for immediate physical danger, not for the meticulous, calculated analysis required in the markets.

In this heightened emotional state, the rational part of the brain (the prefrontal cortex) takes a backseat to the impulsive, emotion-driven amygdala. This leads to:

Impulsive actions: Buying or selling based on fear or greed rather than a sound strategy.

Cognitive biases: Falling victim to common trading pitfalls like chasing losses or cutting profits too early.

Lack of discipline: Abandoning a well-thought-out trading plan in the heat of the moment.

The Value of the Pause Button

The advice to “stop” is the market’s emergency brake. It acknowledges that when emotions run high, objectivity evaporates. Stepping away from the screen allows the nervous system to regulate and the rational mind to regain control.

Successful trading is not about constant action; it’s about patient, disciplined execution of a predefined strategy. The most profitable traders are often the most boring ones—they follow their rules rigorously and avoid the emotional rollercoaster that derails others. The simple text in my image serves as a powerful mantra for anyone engaging with the markets: recognize the physical signs of emotional distress, and when they appear, pause. Your portfolio will thank you

Regards

Why I Continue to Invest in Gold & Crypto

In yesterday’s live session I showed you why I continue to invest in gold and silver and also why Crypto looks scary, but still attractive right now.

On Friday, as gold & silver started to crash, I bought more. I also added more on Monday, and more gold and silver miners. WHY?

Nothing has changed. This is a combination of using my technical (M2) skills, 30 years of investing in metals (on and off), plus the track record of FIAT currencies versus gold and silver.

Gold itself is up 16% since the start of the year, and silver 20% and my miners + an average of 25%, in a month. I showed the historical data in today’s live training session to support my reasoning.

Since 2000, the US Dollar (USD) spending value has almost halved and has devalued by approximately 94.1% against gold and 93.6% against silver. The Euro lost 85% & the GBP 87%

Problems with Friday’s Silver smash

Below are the charts showing you the purchasing power of the dollar over time.

Dollar devaluation chart

Dollar purchasing power

If you want to read the history of gold, below is a very good article. I also recommend watching Mike Maloney’s series on

Although gold dropped around 20% last week , it is already up 12% this week. There are other factors, and also supply and demand, which will cause the price of gold and silver to rise in the coming months and years.

China intending to replace the USD?

Xi is on a mission to make the yuan a strong currency in the future. How? Will he be backing it with GOLD?

Trump is pushing crypto to get the bill through the House by the end of the month. The price of bitcoin is at a bargain right now, anywhere in the current area is around 50 percent to the recent high. While stocks like Mara and coin have the potential to do +100% to all-time highs.

Live: Is GOLD & Silver still a good investment for 2026?

As of this morning, since last week’s live session (8 days ago) my stocks are up 15%, silver is 20% & gold +5%. I shared this with you in detail the whys and when, plus the live account of a friend so you can see the proof.

If I stop now for the year I will outperform most hedge funds! If you want help to build a portfolio, then consider joining my investing group, where I send Telegrams when I buy and sell. If you have at least $200k to invest, then consider working with me.

https://yourinvestingfuture.com/join-our-members-area/

GOLD and Silver have broken all-time highs yet again and show no sign of stopping. I think gold will easily hit 5k this year and possibly 10k by 2030. Of course I could be wrong, NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE.

Many members and friends have asked me lately whether it is still a good time to buy GOLD or Silver? In the past few years, I have been sharing with you why I buying gold and silver and adding to my portfolio.

I started buying gold at $1700 per ounce and silver at $17. Gold is now at $4600, and Silver hit the all time high again today of $91.84. I show in the webinar why converting spare cash into gold and silver last year would have doubled your money. Most of my mining stocks made more!

I am hoping for pullbacks to buy more gold than silver this year. I am also focusing more on the miners, as I showed you last year, they have a much better potential to make larger gains than the actual metal itself.

My best performing stocks, such as AG and GROY, are now up 300% since the start of last year and EDR and EXK are up +250%. This is why I don’t believe in just investing your money into the S&P 500, or worse, just keeping it in a low-interest savings account, which barely keeps up with inflation.

A lot of the crypto stocks I shared yesterday also moved higher and Bitcoin looks like it wants to go on a run…..

As ever I am not a licensed financial adviser in any jurisdiction.

Hopefully Spookily Accurate 🙂 Predictions for 2026

Each year, I try to predict what I believe will happen in all markets for the coming year. Usually, I am pretty accurate, although in 2025 some of my guesstimates were well wrong! However, I still had my best ever investing results (excluding the insane crypto gains we made in 2020/2021, so it wasn’t all bad news.

The S&P made 18% last year. My personal results, shared with members of my investing group: All after the December pullbacks: stocks +138%, Gold +65%, Silver + 153%, Crypto (long term holdings) -11%

In January 2025, I predicted that the $ would go up for a while at least. It dropped a few days later and never looked back! Though in my defence, I did say at the time “I am, for the foreseeable future, focusing on $USA strength. As ever things will change during the year. It could be next week, next month or next season, but there will be pullbacks and possibly a reversal.

I was very wrong about the GBP & UK stock market. However I was spectacularly right with gold, silver and especially the miners (the best made over 300% in 2025 and on average well over 100%)

Check out the video for my Hopefully Spookily Accurate 🙂 Predictions for 2026

I share the sectors I am focusing on and why. If you can catch the right cycle at the right time, you can make profits way in excess of following the S&P

What is Top-Down Analysis?

Top-down analysis is not new. We have been doing it at FMP for a very long time.

It means starting from the Longer timeframes and going down a timeframe to check the direction of the trend. The monthly, weekly, daily, and 4HR are timeframes used for the direction. Anything lower than those is for entries. So you have to remember to stick with your bias you had on longer timeframes and not change that when you head to lower timeframes.

A very good example is how Marc starts on the weekly and goes down to Daily. Sometimes he would go on 4hr to check for more clarity. I will show you a slightly different way to do this on Trading View charts without any indicators on and just look at price action itself.

Top Volatile Currency Pairs in 2025

If you haven’t checked my previous article, I recommend you read that first, as that sets the base for this article as a continuation.

I explained trading styles in more detail in that post, including the most volatile and traded currency pairs. I don’t want to repeat myself and want to make this article more relevant to the current markets. The previous post shows the most traded and volatile pairs of 2023, so it’s been almost 2 years. Things have changed, so we must adapt to the current markets. You can view that post below:

Most volatile Currency Pairs of 2023

Read it? Okay, let’s move on.

You can check out this page on my FX book, which shares data on all pairs and how much they move from 1 minute to monthly average. You can also filter it out and select only relevant pairs that apply to you.

MyFxbook Volatility Filter

The Exotic pairs, without doubt, are the most volatile currency pairs. However, we don’t trade these, and as a retail trader, I recommend you don’t, as they are not liquid and are affected by geopolitical events. Low-liquidity pairs like USD/TRY or USD/ZAR are more volatile due to limited market participants, leading to larger price swings, especially during off-peak trading hours. Spread on these are also horrendous. High-liquidity pairs are generally more stable.

Elections, conflicts, politics and trade tensions create uncertainty, driving market volatility are some of the other reasons why not to trade these pairs.

The best advice I can give you is to trade pairs that you are familiar with. This could be your country’s own currency or any liquid major pair. They are much safer, have better spreads and are more predictable. Also, information on those pairs is easily accessible. If I compare that to China, Brazil or Turkey, you will probably find it harder to get information on those currencies from a reliable source, as they don’t share everything on what is happening in their countries and have the power to share what they want to the rest of the world.

When I wrote the previous post, we were in Biden markets. The currency pairs were not the most volatile, but they were somewhat more predictable, as Biden wouldn’t do much. So forward orders were working for us, and we could peacefully just place them and forget about it.

Since Trump came into power, the market has been very volatile as he is unpredictable and can say anything at any minute. We had a major structure shift, and the charts have been all over the place, making it tougher just to add forward orders, as fundamentals are changing quickly. It’s not that the M2 strategy is not working; it’s just that we are in extraordinary times, and we have to adapt the strategy to these markets. If you can’t do that, then I’m sorry, but this is how you survive in trading. The same pattern won’t work every year, the market changes and has its seasons, and we have to be able to adapt to these conditions. Just like in the ocean, a sailor must keep an eye on the forecast and ensure he doesn’t sail into bad weather, so he navigates around it.

Remember Marc saying he used to trade the London breakout many years back? That worked for a while, and it was easy money. Then it stopped, and he had to go back to longer timeframes again. We are in the same situation right now.

Back to the topic

How To Use ChatGPT In FX Markets?

Hi all,

I Recently discovered an amazing method to use ChatGPT for forex trading. ChatGPT as you know is an AI engine that can be used for various things in our daily life. Writing emails, Rewriting articles, Tidying up speeches and much more.

I find it tough sometimes to understand what the bank statements are trying to tell us when they are released, especially with Western banks such as the FED, BOE, and EU. They can be very repeatable but make minor tweaks in their policies. It is important to read these statements as they give you a clue about the bank’s current and future path. Which investors use as a measure to buy or sell the currency. This gives us an extra edge to understand what might happen to the currency in the coming weeks or months.

How ChatGPT can help us here is I paste the whole speech from the statement and ask it to summarise or briefly explain the statement in simple words. So it will go something on lines of, Summarise this statement from the BOE, or Briefly explain this statement, or explain it to me as a 15-year-old kid. You will be surprised how effective this is. Most of us fear fundamentals and back away as we don’t want to read too much or don’t know how to make sense of it. But don’t worry, ChatGPT is here.

Of course, ChatGPT is one of the AI engines you can use, but there are many out there that you can use as an alternative, such as Grok, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Google Gemini, Perplexity AI, Jasper AI and many more. They all do the same job.

Now, when I was sleeping, a thought came to my mind: What if I told ChatGPT to tell me whether the bank’s statement was bullish or bearish for the currency? Would it do that?

The Answer is YES!

I was amazed again. I put in the same statement and asked if the Fed is bullish on USD in the following statement.:

It did it. It basically gave me a breakdown of the speech, telling me whether it was bullish, bearish, or neutral and why. I nearly flipped the table! It was like I discovered something that someone might not have thought of just yet. Well, I bet someone has thought about it already, but for me, this was new.

Let me know in the comments if you have already tried this.

Of course, this is just an AI Engine, I’m only using this to help me understand the markets I am trading better. It doesn’t mean you bet your house on the decision a computer is calculating. Also, it doesn’t mean I buy the currency just because ChatGPT is telling me to. We have to look at the charts and see if what it says is actually reflected in there. We still have to find our multiple reasons to enter a trade. I thought to share this with you all as some of you, I understand, might not be into fundamentals too much and don’t bother reading the statements as you won’t find much value or just don’t do it as it is extra work. So here is a lazier option.

THANK ME LATER!

Okay, enough of talking, let me show in the video below:

4-Hour Chart Positioning Strategy

This week I thought I’d look at a very simple 4-Hour Chart Positioning Strategy. This strategy could help you position in the direction of the dominant trend on the 4H chart, using structure, confirmation, and proper risk management. I’ve decided to post this week as my strategy hasn’t changed over the last few posts, i.e. A-grade trade areas are quite a distance away (most pairs have made significant moves recently), so I’m trying to use the 4-hour chart to try and get in on moves much earlier. Remember, I use this strategy in conjunction with my ‘normal’ M2 strategies.

1. Trend Identification (Bias Setup)

Give yourself visual flexibility with 10–20 pip zones.

Live: Bitcoin to the moon?

In yesterday’s webinar, I explained why I still think Crypto is a good investment and I believe that Bitcoin still has a lot of potential upside. As ever, not financial advice.

If you still don’t understand Crypto, then go through our mini-course here in the members area, link below. Many folks told me they understand more about crypto from the 30 minute video, unit 1, in the mini-course than months of looking elsewhere.

If you are new to crypto, or trying to understand it then start by watching this 30 min video

For those who want to understand blockchains (THE most important part of crypto) to degree level here is a free MIT course that students paid $100k for: MIT Blockchain & Money

I shared my A portfolio and explained why I added more of most tit during the recent pullback.

When Trump was inaugurated, he gave his team six months to develop a plan and regulations so we could start seeing another boom August/September.
